The change was so subtle that the Green Lantern Corps on Oa didn’t notice anything, no build-up, no strange anomalies. The Lanterns assigned to sectors across the universe noticed it even less. Besides, they all trusted the Guardians to detect any invasion on Oa or anything strange with the Central Battery. After all, that was what being all-knowing and all-powerful was all about, wasn’t it? They trusted their Guardians to know.

The Guardians did know…but they chose not to say anything. The GLC remained ignorant, thinking they were safe and sensing nothing.

But Ion could sensed something amiss. In fact, Ion could tell that the other entities along the Lantern spectrum sensed it as well. The danger spread from outside in, with willpower - the Green Lantern power - being the final take down. Ion’s current host, the Green Lantern Sodam Yat, was no longer safe. And the Green Lantern Kyle Rayner (Ion’s previous host) was far away in the Vega System, and so close to the danger; Ion was sad that he could not be trusted either.

However, the large, whalelike entity had faced this problem before. It did not try to communicate with the Guardians - they were lost to the evil forces long before Kyle Rayner had even headed to the Vega System. Instead, Ion escaped the body of Yat and found solace within the Central Battery.

Then, Oa was attacked. There was barely even a fight, because the Lanterns did not even realize until it was too late. This evil was unfamiliar to Ion and it was powerful, and Ion knew it could not be easily defeated.

~Boop~, Ion bumped against the internal shell of the enormous structure, as the evil descended on Oa, poisoning the Central Battery with a swiftness the willpower entity had not anticipated. ~BOOP. BOOP.~

Ion broke free from the Central Battery and fled Oa. If the Green Lanterns - if the universe - stood any chance, Ion would need sanctuary. So the embodiment of will followed the energy trails left by its fellow entities, to the nearest source of energy and protection. The Green Lantern Corps was lost.

Earth was Ion’s only hope.

You are playing on the patio with your stuffed animals when it appears, in a flash of green light.

From a distance it seems much larger than it is by the time it reaches your side, but the whale-like being means you no harm. It floats through the warm Star City sunlight, catching rays off its fins, and regards you and your play with interest. You feel the will to accomplish all your dreams surging through your body.

«Hello, little calfling» it says inside your mind, voice gentle and encouraging. «I am a friend of one Kyle Rayner. I am the one Ion. I have need of a safe shelter from the coming darkness, may I be allowed to stay with you?»

"Okay," Lian said immediately, because it seemed virtually impossible for this creature to be anything but a friend. She stood up, staring at the whale and patting its snout, as it floated in mid-air, and stared back at her.

Then Lian grinned, holding up a finger. “Oh oh oh - I know what we can do!”

"HEY PAPA! PAPA!! LOOK AT ME!"

When Roy next saw his darling precious daughter, Lian was riding astride a gigantic semi-transparent alien whale-type alien, holding onto its mouth tentacles as though they were reins. The whale-thing was gently weaving through the air, looking slightly baffled but overall quite willing to be Lian’s steed.

"WHEEE! THIS IS MY FRIEND WILLY! WANNA RIDE HIM?!"
