Dick bustled around the apartment over Warriors, packing what little he had from the trip. With the news of Roy’s attack on Ollie and Kate, he was worried about staying there any longer, not just for his safety, but for everyone in the bar. Plus, Kate had told him to look after Lian, and he’d be damned if he didn’t watch over her.

He sat down on the bed next to her and pet her hair. ”Lian, sweetie. Time to wake up now. We’ve gotta go now, princess.”

Lian’s dreams were not pleasant at all. And the moment Dick’s waking her up she forgets them, simply finding it hard to stop shaking from the rush of fear and the sick feeling in her stomach. Whining in her throat she reached her hands up, grabby hands at him. “My tummy hurts.” She complained, wiping tiredly at her eyes and wanting to cover herself with the blanket and hide forever.

Kyle stepped downstairs after Guy left, feeling sick inside from everything that was going on. First Jaime, then something wrong with Kate, Hal off planet…as much as Kyle was trying to tell himself that people were handling things, he hated this idea of - once more - reacting and reacting. Never acting - even when the Lanterns had tried to take precautions, it still didn’t work. People were still getting hurt.

It was frustrating at best, sickening at worst. Currently, Kyle was leaning towards the latter. He felt nauseated, and he chalked it up to the worry and sudden stress, combined with the erratic blend of birthday food. His birthday….Kyle shook his head. Not going to think about that.

Instead, he followed the voice floating out from the guest bedroom, and peeked in. “Hey Dick…is everything okay?

Dick cooed with concern and pulled Lian up into a tight cuddle. ”Aw, baby. I’m sorry! We’re gonna go home to the Manor, OK? And then you can sleep there. We’ll make your tummy feel better, I promise.”

He looked up at Kyle, smiling apologetically. ”Yeah, it’s fine. She just has a tummy ache. Too much cake, I think.” He walked over to Kyle, carrying Lian still nestled in his arms.

“Did you hear about—” He caught himself, glancing at Lian, then mouthed, “Ollie?” Poor Lian didn’t need anymore distress than she was already in.

Kyle held up a hand, standing in front of Dick. He answered Dick’s question with another question. ”Wait you’re going to the Manor? Is that really the best thing to do given the circumstances?” Typical Batboys. First sign of trouble, and they wanted to flee back to their subjectively safe little East Coast nest.

He wracked his tired brain, trying to think of a better place for them to be - stay here? Why would they want to? Jaime was already fucked up twice - once by Kyle even - in this home; the same home where Roy catapulted off of. So…yeah not exactly safe. The Watchtower? After the recent attack, it no longer seemed like the safe haven it once was.

Maybe I could ask Alex, she always knew what to do, Kyle thought, a little dreamily. She was probably still in the fridge, waiting for him…

Kyle suddenly jolted physically, staring at Dick and little mewing Lian as if he didn’t realize they were still there. Wayne Manor. Of course. Damian was already there, and it was the safe haven for children during the Watchtower attack. ”Yeah…we’ll figure this out. Go, keep Lian safe. Tell Oracle…and the rest of your little crew.” Kyle caught Dick’s wrist, looking straight at him. “Remember - communication is key. We have to keep communicating.”

Keep communicating to prevent what was already happening…ugh. Kyle’s stomach felt like it was rebelling and he gagged a bit. Looked like Lian wasn’t the only one who had too much cake.

Dick fought the old Robin instinct to roll his eyes at Kyle’s question. The Manor was always safe! ”I’m sure it’ll be fi—” He stopped when Kyle jolted and reached out for him, worried. He jumped a bit when Kyle grabbed his wrist, scanning his face for any sign of what was wrong.

“I will, Kyle. When I know something, you’ll know.” He took a step closer to Kyle, leaning in, and whispered, “What’s happened to Roy? Has he really—?” What could they even do now?
“Si, let me know,” Kyle said, licking his dry lips. “Or Guy, either of us.” His mind swam back to poor little Jaime’s words before he passed out from the pain. Red, he’d said. And even the memory sent a chill through Kyle. He wasn’t going to keep it from anyone any longer, now that Roy did what they suspected he would…and they still screwed up anyway trying to prevent it.

“Yes,” Kyle said, and he felt a slight wave of dizzyness, a weird burning in the back of throat. “We’ll take care of it. Of him,” Kyle hastily corrected himself. “We’ll bring him back. I just…no one else needs to be hurt. We’re gonna make sure of that. I’m sorry…” he realized he’d just started tossing word salad by now, not really making coherent sentences anymore; and in order to stop himself, he took a couple steps back. “I’ll take you up to the zeta platform, ‘kay?”

Dick’s mouth went dry and he swallowed thickly, trying not to worry or panic. ”Thanks.” They bustled off to the zeta platform, Lian wriggling and whimpering. Dick turned to Kyle. ”Let me know when you find him.” He keyed in the code for Wayne Manor and disappeared.

The minute they’re in the manor, Lian curls in closer. Her body aches and she keeps seeing things that aren’t really there. Green eyes wavering in the fear, her nails digging into Dick’s skin, she doesn’t want to let. “Nn…Mommy…my tummeh..” She complains more, squirming as she shouts at ducking her head from seeing her Papa punch Dick into the face. Only to feel no one else there except for Dick hugging her close.

Dick hugged her tighter and froze at Lian’s shout, looking around sharply to see what could have spooked her. No one else was there. He nosed her cheek, trying to make her look at him. ”Lian? Sweetie? What’s wrong? I’ll get you to bed, OK?”

Lian shivered and shouted as it felt the the bed was in fire. She jerked and ran from Dick, shaking her head with a sob and hiding in the open closet. “S-Stop. I’ll be good. I’ll be good.” she shunned practically breaking down.

Dick’s heart broke into pieces watching Lian’s terror. He came to her slowly, dropping to his knees as he got close, trying to stay on her level. ”Lian, baby. It’s Dick. It’s Mommy. I won’t hurt you, princess. I won’t hurt you, and I won’t leave you. I promise.”

He stopped a few feet from her, reaching out to hold her. ”Come here, Lian, baby. Come to Mommy. I’ll make it better. I promise.”

Lian cried, shaking and feel sick all over as she rocked back and forth inside of the closet. Her entirely body felt hot and she could barely see. Her focus was shot and every time she looked up there was nothing but a creature in a black cloak ominously waiting outside of the closet from her. Mumbling and whimpering, she shook her head. ” N-o..nononononono..I dun wanna go outside..I’ll be good..I’ll be good.” She sobbed, shrieking and fleeing the closet when a spider started speaking to her. She ran right into the cloak of the figure and cried harder.

Dick caught up Lian in his arms as she ran, cuddling her close. He couldn’t understand what was happening. She seemed alright earlier and now…. Now, it was like she was caught up in a living nightmare. Part of him wondered at that phrasing, but it was ignored. He had a terrified child to help.

He kissed her temple and shushed softly. ”Lian. It’s Dick. It’s Mommy. Mommy’s not gonna hurt you. Mommy won’t let anyone hurt you. Mommy’s gonna keep you safe, OK? Mommy’s gonna keep you safe till Papa comes home.”

Lian shivered in his arms, running a high fever as her body fought off whatever was wrong with her. Tears stinging her eyes, her hand began to hurt and bleed for no reason. Holding it out of the way she shook her head, crying as she watched her Papa walking away from her. “St-stop!” She shouted, yelling until her voice was hoarse and she sit in Dick’s arms, no longer able to do anything but wibble and cry her eyes out. Exhaustion took over after what seemed like forever and Lian grew quiet, traumatized by her nightmares.
Dick sat there on the ground and rocked her gently, petting her hair, and whispering soothing words. Exhaustion. She must have eaten something bad, and the exhaustion from whatever she had going through her system made her panic.

His poor baby.

Finally, after several long minutes of holder her long after she was asleep, he stood and tucked her into bed, sitting with her to make sure she slept. His poor baby girl. All she wanted was her family. That wasn’t too much for his angel.

“She’s not yours!”

His head snapped up as he looked around, trying to find the source of the voice.

“…Roy?”

“She’s not your fucking daughter!”

“Roy,” Dick whispered to the empty room. ”Where are you?”

“Get away from her.”

“Roy—”

Roy wasn’t there. Of course he wasn’t. He was off doing god knows what. But he was there. Inside Dick’s head.

He all but ran from the room, stumbling down the hall. God, he needed sleep. He was so tired.
