and now the news
Jogging to a stop, Wally grinned and waved at a few kids on the sidewalk, reveling in their smiles and excited tugging at their mom’s hand to point him out. He needed this. He needed some time with his city, away from the League, away from the drama, away from everything. He needed to center and just…be.
Picking up a jog again, he raced around the city just slow enough to be seen. People liked being reminded he was there, that he was looking after them. They felt safe knowing the Flash was always just a few steps away. On his way around, he stopped a couple of robberies, snatched a kid chasing a ball into a busy street, and diffused a hostage situation by replacing the perp’s gun with a banana.
All in a day’s work.
As he turned back at the bridge to Central, he swore he saw something out of the corner of his eye. It wasn’t all that uncommon, really, sometimes when he got up to speed he just missed things. But…he saw it again, a black blur just out of sight. His heart picked up, part of him knowing what he saw but unable to believe it. The acrid smell of ozone and decay slapped him in the face as he took off again. It was there.
It was behind him.
The Black Flash.
Looking over his shoulder, he saw the black clad wraith, claw like hands out stretched and lipless mouth bearing yellowed teeth. Wally sped up, gold and red lightning licking off of him in arcs. The ghoul kept pace black lightning sparking off of it with a deep roar like thunder.
As he looked around, the world moved in slow motion, but he could still see pandemonium all over. People were running, screaming, crying out in terror. Could they see it, too?
No time to think about it, he told himself. Just run, run, RUN!!! If he slowed at all, Black Flash would catch him, and it would be all over. The road ahead of him seemed to stretch on forever, and yet he couldn’t make himself go any faster. His legs ached and his lungs burned, the stink of death choking him.
Don’t stop, don’t stop!
The speed blur around him brightened and fluctuated, then dimmed and seemed to slow down. What was going on? Looking back, Wally almost screamed to see the Black Flash was almost on him. Willing his legs to move, he took off again. He was starting to feel light headed, and no matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t go faster.
Run, RUN!
He didn’t know where he was anymore, running blind in the mad rush of colour and sound. He just knew he couldn’t stop, he couldn’t slow down. His legs wobbled and he lost his footing. His hands came out in front to catch him, arms jarring as he hit the ground and rolled.
He had crashed into a side alley, alone amid the rising pandemonium in the city. The Black Flash was there, looming over him. Wally screamed as the clawed hand reached down, clutching the lightning bolt on his chest.
And everything went dark.
“Breaking news this afternoon, madness has broken out in Keystone City. Around 3PM, residents of the industrial heart of the Midwest became a city in turmoil. Witnesses say people suddenly began screaming, pointing every direction and running in terror. No one knows what this unseen horror is, and authorizes have not commented on Rogue activity. We now go to our correspondent live at the front lines.”
‘It came out of nowhere. Some people think it was a terrorist attack, others think it’s the work of the usual suspects, any number of the twin cities’ famous Rogues Gallery. One thing is for certain, the city is in peril.’
I was just walking out of a store when a man ran by and grabbed me, screaming about giant space roaches. Some other lady was shrieking about blood, but there wasn’t a scratch on her.
‘Officers are trying their best to contain the situation, taking to the streets in riot gear and protective masks.’
We don’t know the cause. Right now, we just want to keep the city and her people safe.
‘Residents are being encouraged to stay inside until the source has been identified.’
“The bridge to Central City has been closed, and all ways in and out of the city have been blockaded by police. As of yet, there has been no sign of the Flash.”
It seemed like everyone was dropping like flies around everywhere, and Rose couldn’t stay in Medbay with all the sick people, while Mia was sleeping and nightmaring, it alternately freaked her out and drove her crazy. Connor was there, just there, taking care of her. It was so annoying for some reason.
But she was stalking about in the cafeteria of the Watchtower (where else was there to go?) when she caught the breaking news from Keystone. People acting crazy? Screaming incoherent shit and being all terrified? This couldn’t be a coincidence…
…having the Flash missing clinched it. Running back to the medbay where it seemed like half the Arrow family was in various states of misery, Rose grabbed Connor’s shoulder roughly and spun him around.
“We have to go. Keystone’s fucked up and Flash isn’t anywhere to be seen.” Giving a half-mad laugh, Rose posed, standing arms akimbo. “Connor-baby, we’re the Justice League right now. Get your hot butt suited up, we’re gonna go find Flash.”
Connor wasn’t sure if what Mia was going through was just stress, her immune system already wasn’t great, so maybe everything that happened had just gotten to her? Maybe she was just making herself sick worrying about Ollie, and Kate, and Roy.
Whatever the problem was, he was trying his best to settle her down. Nothing he was trying was working. Though she had at least gone back to sleep. That was something right? And she didn’t seem like she was tossing and turning as much anymore. Whatever had been the problem, maybe she was getting over it. Because she seemed like she was doing a little better he had been debating if he should go and see how Oliver was holding up.
Before he decided he was abruptly grabbed and turned around to face Rose, who looked… all business. “What?”
He didn’t mean ‘what’ as in ‘I didn’t understand’. Just the way people asked what when they were trying to process what someone had just said. “Oh, ok?” He looked around and kind of felt like if she really tried she probably could have gotten ahold of anyone else.
But while he didn’t want to leave his family, he wasn’t going to shirk any duties. Especially not to help a friend, like Wally. “Meet me at the zeta tubes in five minutes.” He said and nodded his head before heading off to find his suit.
“Sounds like a plan,” Rose said, and returned to her old room on the Watchtower, grabbing and zipping into her outfit…until she realized she’d be weaponless. As a SeRVE member, they’d confiscated all of her weapons. “Dammit!” She was about to punch the wall, but she decided to stay calm. It was alright, she didn’t need her swords. She was a weapon herself, after all.
Heading to the zeta tubes, she saw Connor was already there, and oooh baby did he look hot in his Green Arrow getup. She smirked. “So…what do I call you in the field? GA Junior?”
The news feed about Keystone was still broadcasting on one of the monitors in the transport room, and Rose nudged Connor and pointed, so he could see the rampaging crazytown happening. ”Hey the Justice League doesn’t have trackers or anything on them, do they? Cuz that would make this search and rescue shit a lot easier.” She grimaced as she stepped into the transport. “God. Where the hell is he?”
Rose didn’t know too much about Wally West, but she knew Bai well enough and one speedster was as good as another, Rose figured. And one thing she did know about them - they were fiercely loyal to protecting the people they loved.
As Connor was tying his mask around his head he heard Rose approach then speak. He looked up at her. “Green Arrow is fine. Connor is even fine if that’s to hard to remember.” He never really had MUCH of a secret identity before to be honest. At least not while Oliver was gone, and no one really called him Green Arrow that much… Oh well.
It didn’t really matter.
“If he was wearing his JL communicator, they might have one in that.” But he would have called for help if that was the case, wouldn’t he? Although, to be fair it wasn’t like they really knew what had happened to him.
He looked over at Rose as they Zeta’d down to Keystone. They had to be smart about this. And while Wally could definitely be in danger, if they didn’t make sure the civilians were safe, it could lead to an even worse situation. “Don’t worry. We’ll find him. Make it a priority to help contain the civilians, and break up any riots or… whatever is going on. But keep an eye out for anything strange that might lead us to find Flash, okay?”
It would be so much more helpful if they weren’t going into this blind without having any idea what could be causing the people to act like this. But you had to do what you had to do…
“Wait,” Rose dashed out of the transport room, eventually returning with gas masks. She handed one to Connor. ”I’m just thinking - what if it’s some sort of, like….fear toxin? Like from the Joker or…Scarecrow that guy. I mean, Mia looked kinda like she was, y’know. Scared of shit. And now these people?” Rose hated toxins. Hated them. Any drugs, really. “Just in case.”
She still wasn’t used to the feeling of the zeta tubes, but she managed to be zapped down to Keystone without gagging to much. Where they’d appeared was off of a quiet city street. Too quiet- everything was completely devoid of people, and any cars on the street were either crashed, broken into or on fire.
“Looks like a zombie attack,” Rose snorted, her voice sounding canned behind the mask. She jumped a bit, when in the distance they saw some people running, one man wailing about bear attacks while a woman chased him, trying to beat him with her purse. Rose stared at Connor. “This place is mad. We should just try to find Flash.”
Connor wasn’t sure if Rose was right or not. And… would it really matter if he wore a mask, it wasn’t like he hadn’t just been around Mia. But the fact that these people in Keystone were experiencing something like Mia was proved that it wasn’t anything to really do with her health. If Wally was dealing with it too maybe it was something they had gotten at Kyle’s party or something…
But he pulled the mask on anyway, just in case and looked around as they stepped out of the zeta tube.
He didn’t really know what a zombie attack looked like. He’d never really been into that kind of stuff enough to watch any movies or tv shows like his dad and Mia did. But he guessed it’d probably look a little like this.
“Just keep an eye out for anyone you can help.” He was glad Keystone wasn’t exactly that large, that was for sure. He looked over at Rose for a moment deciding he didn’t have much to worry about if they split up, if anyone could handle herself it was Rose. “Head down that street, I’ll go down this one. Make sure you check every where you can. We should comm each other every time we head down another street so we know where the other is at all times. If you find Flash let me know as soon as possible.
“Sound good?”
“Yeah guess we’re gonna have to do this the hard way.” Rose said, but she didn’t go into further detail. “Seriously, what is going ON with people right now? Are they gonna recover? Do we need to like shakedown that Scarecrow asshole for an anti-toxin or something? Who’s to blame for this?” There was always someone to blame, that she knew. They just didn’t know who, yet.
They started combing the streets, every now and then having to get in scuffles with some freaked out citizen. Rose was pretty sure she was being a helluva lot more rougher with them than Mr Zenboy, but like she cared. They’d thank her tomorrow when all they suffered was being knocked out and not dead.
After about an hour of checking in every fifteen minutes, Rose suddenly comm’d Connor.
“I think I got something. You better come take a look at this.” Rose stared down a street she’d just turned on. The street itself was ripped up, straight down the middle, as if a tornado had ripped through…a tornado, or a really really anxious speedster on full tilt. Rose couldn’t really tell if he was heading north or south, so she waited for Connor to arrive. She figured with all his Eurafriasian looks, he had to be a good tracker or something, right?
Connor had no answers for any of Rose’s questions so he didn’t try and respond. Instead they both just went their separate ways.
A lot of people seemed to be… more afraid of him then willing to do anything like attack him. When he approached a man who was trying to get himself out of some non existent trap, he managed to kick Conner in the shoulder pretty hard before he ran off. But besides that no one really seemed to even notice he was there. And this was getting a little frustrating looking in every place he could find, for Wally.
Where was he?
Thankfully, Rose comm’d him letting him know she may have found something. “I’m on my way.” He said. Again he was happy Keystone wasn’t that large because it only took him a few minutes to get to Rose and he looked around. “Yeah, that’s definitely something. Come on…” It wasn’t that hard to follow whatever this trail had come from. It was pretty obvious.
Especially as it turned down an alleyway out of sight. “It goes this way.” He said motioning down the alley as he turned spotting something red near the end of it. “What’s that?” Connor said stepping up his pace as Wally came into view. “Flash!” He said crouching down next to him and turning to Rose. “He’s unconscious. Send a message to the Watchtower that we need medical assistance.” It seemed like they were going to be quite busy soon…
Wally’s eyes fluttered a little, but stayed closed. He heard sounds around him, voices probably, but who he had no idea. Sweat beaded off the speedster’s brow, his skin scalding hot with a fever as he laid there shivering.
His mind was in and out of wild dreams, and the first time anyone touched him, he would jerk and cry out like he’d been hurt, then return to quietly shivering. There was no waking him, no saving him from the ravings of his mind.
“Maybe you should—” Rose started to say, after she told the Watchtower to prep for a medical emergency. As they transported up and onto the zeta tube platform in the space station, she completed “— slap him?” She shrugged as the medical team rushed forward. “I can slap him.”
Really, it kinda freaked her out to see him like this. She thought of Bai, and how speedsters were when they were injured…she punched Connor’s arm roughly.
“You go with him. I’m going to…whatever. Let Superman know that Keystone is like hella fucked up.” It wasn’t as though she was lying - she had every intention of letting Superman know. But first she texted Bai.
TXT: Bai your cousin or whatever is totally kaput. He’s in the Watchtower? You coming or what? Explain to these doctors what’s happening?
The cries of horror that ring in the streets of Keystone City reach Superman’s ears long before he touches down on the sidewalk. Terrified citizens are running amok, some better at maintaining their composure and staving off the hallucinations than others. A man convinced that everyone he sees is a grizzly bear runs swinging a garden hoe like a machete, determined to cut down the forest of bears before they get him. He charges at Clark the moment he spots him, and Clark disarms him and carries him kicking and wailing under one arm.
“Any news on what’s causing this yet?” Superman asks over the League frequency as he glides down to land near a mostly-cognizant police officer, gesturing for her to cuff the man still wailing about grizzly bears. He continues sweeping the city to corral those citizens that are most dangerous to themselves or others.
Picking up a jog again, he raced around the city just slow enough to be seen. People liked being reminded he was there, that he was looking after them. They felt safe knowing the Flash was always just a few steps away.
