priorities
Damian Wayne pulls back into the cave, throwing his helmet to the floor as he kicks his bike to a stop and looking sour.
Batman: Damian?
Damian Wayne: The stupid doctor doesn’t know anything. He could barely confirm his own name without stuttering.
Damian Wayne glances at the Lantern
Damian Wayne: What are you doing here, Gardner?
Guy shrugs, “Just payin’ a visit. Seein’ if Dick was around…how’re you doin’, Damian?”
Damian Wayne: Peachy.
Damian Wayne: Grayson is leaving. Going back to Bludhaven.
Damian Wayne sits down at a computer and types, scowling at the screen
Batman switches the screen to his last saved level of Professor Layton.
Guy frowns “Leaving?”
Batman: Nygma’s online.
Batman: [to Damian] Guess which one he is.
Batman: [to Guy] Dick is moving back to Bludhaven.
Damian Wayne looks at the game in mild surprise, but remains preoccupied with the discussion of Grayson
Damian Wayne: He was gone for a long time, you know.
Guy “I know. I was with him.”
Damian Wayne: I know you’re aware, Gardner. You were an accomplice. But did you know he left suddenly for Europe, Father?
Batman: Dick needed some space.
Batman: So he went.
Damian Wayne: -tt-
Batman: That is all.
Guy frowns. “Accomplice? Look, Damian, Dick was in danger. I was protecting him.”
Damian Wayne folds his arms, remaining skeptical
Damian Wayne: Did he leave because he was in danger or did he run into danger because he left?
Batman: Enough.
Batman: Dick had his reasons. But he came back.
Batman: Now he’s going back to Bludhaven, for his own reasons.
Guy frowns at Damian, “You can’t have it both ways, Damian. You can’t insist you don’t need adults around to look after you, and then hold it all against them when they take you up on that.”
Damian Wayne looks from one to the other, shoulders stiffening and color rising to his face. “It doesn’t have anything to do with me needing him! He wasn’t here when Gotham needed Batman!”
Damian Wayne jabs a finger toward Father. “And neither were you.”
Guy raises both eyebrows in the awkward moment. “I think I should go…”
Batman looks at Damian.
Batman looks at Guy.
Batman: Yes, you should.
Damian Wayne breathes hard through his nose, only his eyes moving as he watches the Lantern
Guy “Seeya later, Bats. Thanks for the cookies and coffee.” He heads for the elevator, to find Dick in the Manor.
Batman: Damian.
Batman: Is there something you’d like to tell me?
Damian Wayne swallows once, hands flexing at his sides.
Damian Wayne: That depends on what you’ve already been told.
Batman folds his arms.
Batman: Spit it out.
Damian Wayne: … I didn’t do anything except what had to be done. Two-Face had returned, and he only fears Batman. You and Grayson weren’t here!
Batman: You knew the rules.
Batman: Two-Face is NOT to be engaged without backup.
Batman: Batson is not trained against our enemies.
Damian Wayne holds Father’s gaze, remaining defiant on this issue. “If you both hadn’t abandoned Gotham at the same time, I wouldn’t have!”
Batman: We did not ABANDON Gotham.
Damian Wayne: I… Batson was admittedly a poor decision on my part.
Batman: There were other concerns that took priority.
Damian Wayne: But that is the only thing I regret!
Batman: Is it?
Damian Wayne hesitates only for a second. “Yes.”
Batman reaches out, hesitates briefly, but places his hand firmly on Damian’s shoulder.
Damian Wayne glances aside at the hand, following the length of his arm back up to his face
Batman: true character is not built by success.
Batman: but by failure.
Damian Wayne: …What?
Batman: You were stupid, reckless, and you endangered someone while pursing a stupid and reckless goal.
Batman: but it could have been much worse.
Batman glances at the case with Jason’s Robin costume.
Damian Wayne follows Batman’s gaze. “I had it under control. I wouldn’t have—” He trails off, recalling the moments he thought were certain to be his last before Stephanie came to their rescue.
Batman: No. You didn’t.
Batman: You have a lot to learn.
Batman: In this business, mistakes can be very costly.
Damian Wayne bites his lip. “I know that.”
Batman: No, you don’t.
Batman: I wish to heaven that you never do.
Damian Wayne studies Father’s expression a moment before lowering his eyes with a shake of his head. “I couldn’t just ignore Two-Face.”
Batman: Learn to.
Batman: Or I will call Stephanie to keep an eye on you.
Batman: Or perhaps Tim.
Damian Wayne glowers in silent indignation
Batman looks at the computer screen.
Batman: You should catch up with Nygma in-game.
Damian Wayne frowns in the direction of the screen, not eager about this suggestion but hesitant to squabble about anything else at the moment. “Very well,” he concedes with a soft sigh, sitting down to play.
