day in the park fun day
After one of the bands played was when Mia had been scheduled to go up and talk. This was her doing and it was probably expected that she was supposed to make some kind of speech. The bands she had booked were mostly local bands, or from around California who had taken the time to get in contact with her and expressed that they wanted to play. The one that played before she was introduced was a band from her school. Since Mia knew them she said they could be the ones that introduced her, which they did to a very loud applause that kind of shocked Mia.
She headed out onto the stage, squinting against the lights. Mia had gotten that everyone was here because… well of her. Because if she hadn’t put this together it wouldn’t have ever happened. Not that she didn’t have help, like this would have ever happened if she hadn’t searched through Ollie’s contacts at QT for their event planners, and things like that. But everyone was going to be listening to what she had to say, and it was kind of a trip.
“Hi.” Mia said as she struggled to lower the microphone to her level, having enough trouble that a stage hand had to come out to help her. She stood back and there was laughter through the crowed making her smile as she stepped back up to the mic, “Thanks.” She called to the guy and he waved heading off state, “I knew I should have booked the band with the short lead singer before me.” More laughing and Mia shook her head. “Alright. Lets calm down, Hello everyone! If you didn’t already know because you have been not paying attention to the news or any media and just thought today would be a good day to come to the park, I’m Mia Dearden, and this is special day. Park Fun Day. Which, I think, it has lived up to it’s name already. At least for me, any time I get to dunk Ollie in a dunk tank like three times is a fun day for me.”
More laughter and Mia leaned her head forward as she laughed as well. “But this isn’t just some Fun Day for no reason. We’re here to help a very important charity who helps kids and teenagers get off the street, by actually going out there and working hard to help them. There are a lot of them here today actually.” She motioned down to the front of the crowed where loud cheers came from. “I wanted to do this for them because I know what its like out there and knowing that there is no one who really cares. People like Godfrey and can preach about how they do what they do because they want to ‘protect the children’ when they’re really not.
“Every year there are more then two million people under the age of eighteen who will be homeless. Almost half of those are because abuse in their home. As many as twenty thousand kids are forced into prostitution every year, a good part of them are homeless with no where else to go. And forty percent of the homeless in the United States are under the age of eighteen. These are horrible statistics. And what are the ‘Right Thinkers’ focusing on to ‘protect the children’? The Justice League. Superheroes.” She let out a small groan and rolled her eyes. “I can promise you, that is not even close to one of the problems that is plaguing the youth of America. And I’m going to go on record saying the My Mia campaign is a piece of trash.
“Oliver Queen is the first man in my life who never… tried to hurt me. And what’s wrong with little girls looking up to Kate Spencer? She isn’t just someone who fights crime while she’s wearing tights, she’s also an extremely good lawyer who makes sure that people who should be in jail go there. These are not the people anyone should be focusing on. That is not where you’re energy should be going if you want to help out Young people. If you want to help young people you should get out there and help out Young people. Volunteer at the boys and girls club, donate money or time to public schools, shelters, there are tons of things you can do. Lets use the energy you’re using to ‘protect’ and ‘shelter’ your kids, and put that into actually protecting and sheltering kids. That’s what the My Mia campaign should be about.”
Mia paused as the crowed cheered loudly and smiled at everyone. “Thankfully everyone here realizes all of this already and from people buying these shirts alone we’ve made around A Hundred Thousand dollars.” She paused again and bounced happily through the applause. “I know, right? These aren’t even that good of t-shirts.” She laughed and grabbed the mic rocking back on her heels. “I know you’re all waiting to hear the next band, and they’re very good I promise, so I’ll wrap this up. All I want to say is thank you, to everyone for making this possible. All of you, everyone who has bought a shirt, all of my family and friends for being here to support my silly whims, all the volunteers, venders, everyone working here today.
“Just… Thank you. It really means a lot to me. And I know it means a lot to the people you’re helping out. You’re all amazing. And the night is young so hang around and spend more money, it all goes to the charity. Have fun everybody, Good Night!”
