"Wh-wait. You called me here to help you decorate?” Kyle holds her aloft in her high-ceiling’d apartment while she decides between a star or an angel for the top of the tree. ”Not that I mind, I thought…”

Zee swings her legs as she continues to swap out star- angel, angel- star…angel…star? “Of course I called you to help decorate, Kyle!”

She smiles down to him, settling on the star on top of the tree. “I’d like to think this is somewhat your home too, and you’re supposed to decorate with your family.” she pauses straightening the star once more, “Maybe you’ll get a little reward out of your assistance too.”
"Family…" Kyle echoes in a murmur, initially confused until he remembers - their talk in the Manor when they were on the search for Ramsey. His arm loops a little tighter around Zee’s waist, and he nuzzles into the back of her hair inhaling the sweet, intoxicating scent of Zee.

"The angel, definitely," he says eventually, reaching up to take the star away from her. "She looks ready to lay down some Christmas Justice - perfect for a Gotham…a Gotham home, don’tcha think."

"She does look pretty fierce." she agrees, swapping out the star and resting the angel on top per Kyle’s suggestion, "Then you can take the star to your place if you guys haven’t decorated a tree there. It seems more Coast City cool anyway."

Sliding down onto the floor, but keeping close she leans in, “Christmas hasn’t really ever been a big holiday for me, I don’t have any seasonal traditions other than maybe appearing on holiday variety shows. But this year…I don’t know. You tell me.”

"Wellll, I guess it depends on the Christmas. Sometimes I mad-loved it, sometimes I got grumpy-grinchy…and for a while Christmas wasn’t really a thing because I was on Oa, heh." He scratches fondly at Zee’s shoulder and then wanders into her kitchen, getting them a couple Oranginas.

"So if you want, we can do the whole…cheesy…coming up with, ah, holiday…stuff. Together?" Kyle emerges, handing her a bottle and laughs, self-consciously. "Or whatever. We’ll play it by ear. Wow, ha…I forgot how weird the Very First Couple Holiday Season tends to be…"
"Grumpy-grinchy, seriously you? I find that hard to believe." she smirks, watching him head out to the kitchen.

"Sorry if I’m kind of throwing Christmas cheer at you all at once, I think I’ve probably just watched one too many cheesy TV rom-coms about the holiday season." she takes her Orangina from him, "Playing it by ear is fine, it doesn’t really have to be all that special. I just figured thinking up small excuses to spend time with you isn’t too hard to come up with right now. Today decorating…tomorrow, well we don’t have to do anything tomorrow."

She curves her lips around her bottle, not taking a sip as she thinks with the cool glass against her teeth. Pulling the bottle back she asks, “Have you had a lot of First Couple Holiday Seasons before?”

"I can get pretty sulky," Kyle assures her, grinning. He cracks open his bottle (Zee’d gotten him hooked on these fizzy orange drinks, honestly) taking a generous gulp. "Last year I went to midnight Mass. Y’know - Catholics," he grins and rolls his eyes. "I went for mom’s sake, because she died last year. I don’t think I’ll go again."

When Kyle kisses Zee again, she tastes all orangey. And whatever clove-rich candles she has burning in her home only adds to the whole Christmassy feel. “But don’t be sorry! This year is definitely a ‘hooray holidays’ year! I want special. I want special with you, chica. We can spend from now till Christmas attached at the hip, I can dig it.” And he really can.

Sprawling out onto the couch to admire her tree - their tree - Kyle grins, getting nostalgic. ”Ah - well, yeah. First with Alex was a fiasco, no surprise there. First with Donna was…hm.” He makes a wry face. ”I had monitor duty for the stupid Titans, but. Donna kept me company. That was nice. And first with Jenny was real family like - Alan and Todd and Scott-Rice-Hayden antics. So. What about you? I wanna know about Zee’s holiday line-up of toads and other ribbits.” Kyle reaches out to take Zee’s hand, tugging her over.

"First with Zee, the whole family’s right here. No need to go anywhere, right? Just you, me, buns and lots of mulled wine." Kyle nuzzles her hand. "How’s that sound? Ay mierda, this means I need to get Pot and Tah gifts. Baby carrots?"

She taps her fingers against her bottle, “No more mass huh…I’m sure your mom knows you’re thinking about her.” she gives a light shrug, “I never was involved in any big religion. My dad always joked we were a little bit of everything and a dash of nothing. Whatever that means.” she shook her head, her father’s words ghosting through her head now like a broken record.

"I don’t know about attached at the hip- but special. I want special too." she smiles, pecking him back for the tender tart fizz that remains on his lips. "Although you do clean up well enough to be some fantastic arm candy at parties…" she waves her hand, "I’ll keep you posted, don’t worry about it."

She rolls her eyes, curling up next to him comfortably- legs tucked beneath her and head leaning onto his shoulder. By far the most comfortable way she’d found to recline with Kyle Rayner, “Seriously the most any of my toadies ever got to do was come to some crappy holiday parties with me. Nothing more than that. Usually I’d just grumble through the night and get buzzed off eggnog or wine…” she shrugs taking another sip from her bottle, “After Clark, you’re the only one I ever wanted to decorate my Christmas tree with. Although, with Clark he was even more into Christmas cheer than the both of us combined. We’re more on the same level- somewhere between Humbug and Santa is real.”

Zee squeezes against Kyle’s side, her arm curling against his waist comfortably, “The whole family’s here.” she agreed with a nod, “That sounds like a perfect plan. Although, my show’s big premiere is coming up in just a few days…maybe that’s why I’m wanting to squeeze in so much holiday cheer right now.” she smacks a kiss against his cheek, her lips a sticky orange by now, “Do you think you can make the premiere? I’ve got tickets for anyone if you want to come with friends.” she laughs at his idea for the rabbits, ”Oh, baby carrots probably wouldn’t hurt, despite how I talk them up Pot and Tah aren’t too picky. They’d love anything from their favorite daddy.”

"So…the magi, uh, species don’t have any specific religions? Is magic considered like a religion?" Kyle muses, mostly just saying things but also inherently curious. He can’t help asking about Zee, always wanting to learn more about her.

When she settles in against him, he makes sure they can face the Christmas tree and admire her handiwork. It’s kind of cheesy, he knows that - and yet the traditionalist in him embraced all the trappings of the holiday spirit, especially with Zee there to share it with him. Kyle wants to mentally document as much of this as he can. He doesn’t want to take this feeling for granted. Not a third time. Not with the unpredictability of their lives.

When Zee mentions Clark, he instinctively glances down at her hand…only the wedding band is no longer there. It’s not something that makes Kyle entirely happy or relieved or anything like that. It just…is. She wore her ring and he understood why. Now she took it off, and the weight of that understanding was almost pleasant, like a warm comforter on a cold day. Kyle loops his arm around her shoulder as she cuddles, reaching forward and taking her hand in his.

"Your show!" he exclaims. "Wow that’s good planning. In time for the Christmas holidays, huh? Did - did you get all the final paperwork done when I was off-planet?" Kyle ventures to ask - not wanting to scrape up raw memories, but his curiosity wins over tact. "Of course I wanna come to the premiere, I’ll be there with a thousand white roses for my honeybaby."

He kisses her head and grins. “They’re your friends too, nena; why don’t you invite them? Does the Great and Powerful Zatanna Zatara suddenly got a case of the shyness?”

"Sub-race." she casually corrects, "I mean, maybe there is some religious elements with our type of magic- I know there’s other religions out there based off of magic elements. But, I guess I don’t really my magic as some divine element. It’s just something that happens to be a part of me." she shrugs, rubbing her fingers against the soft jersey of Kyle’s shirt.

She gazes on at the tree, posed comfortably against Kyle on the couch. The tree light’s flicker on and off, their random blinking timer kicking in now, and Zee slowly blinks along with them. She quietly almost feels like something’s missing, or absent, but that’s impossible. Kyle’s here, she has a home, her rabbits. What more could she honestly ask for?

Maybe it’d come to her later. It doesn’t really matter she thinks once Kyle’s hand is against her’s, any doubting thoughts she held whisking away with his touch.

"I was in the process of finishing it when you came back, and I finally finished and submitted it all when you were out again." she smirks, swatting a hand at him, "I don’t even think you can carry a thousand roses without your ring. I’ll gladly take them though." she leans up, smacking a firm kiss against his lips.

"I know they’re my friends but you’re the one sitting in the audience I figured you’d want to pick, not me!" she playfully slaps a hand against Kyle’s chest, "I am anything but shy!" and for the most part that was true. As with any show she was a bit jittery, but plunging through with a big last minute press push would set all that aside. Just a few days from now she’d be begging for the stage to light up and the curtains raised. "Maybe I’ll leave tickets out in a bowl at the lounge and you can sit between Booster Gold and freaking Plastic Man for all I care!"
Kyle groans loudly. “No, no no Plas or Booster, please. Trust me - it’d be a punishment for you too, you don’t want either of those yahoo’s in front row staring up at you, querida. Nope.” He laughs along with her, subsiding comfortably and drinking off the rest of his Orangina.

"Okay, well. Everyone’s pretty busy— " Roy was at the cabin, Mar’i was a busy bee, Kate was…well. He’d talk to Steph at the holiday fair and also send a text to Dick. "I’ll send a text to Zach and to Mia and ask if they wanna come, at least. She gave me his cell number…I’m pretty sure for teasing purposes." Kyle chuckles. He doesn’t mind, it’s not like he’ll go out of his way to pester Zach, although the kid did make it easy sometimes.

"You’re gonna be great." As if Zee doesn’t already know; but Kyle always believes in the power of assurances, from the people who mattered. As relaxed as she is against him, he can feel her a bit jittery - which Kyle chalks up to pre-show nerves. He kisses her hair once and then again, and settles them both back into the couch for the rest of their evening.
