sorting
Rose stalked into the cafeteria; and, upon seeing Mia and knowing Mia spotted her grand entrance, she couldn’t help but steer around her, heading to where the food was. She just got a peach and a bowl of grapes, though, before coming over to slide grimly opposite Mia.
“How are they,” Rose asked, concentrating on pushing a loose grape around with her finger.
Mia was tearing the crust off of her bread, eating that before she started on the rest of her toast. It was a weird thing she always did with her sandwiches. She watched as Rose went to get something to eat and then came and sat down across from her.
She sighed, “They’re alive.” Mia said and shrugged her shoulders. “Kate’s doing ok, besides the pain I’m guessing. And Ollie’s alive. Hal’s here now so that’s good.” She grabbed her water bottle off the table and took a drink frowning. “This sucks. I mean it’s not like we didn’t just go through a whole bunch of crap. Shit.”
“Seriously,” Rose agreed, eating three grapes at once before pulling out a switchblade to cut into the peach. She pushed over a couple peach slices for Mia. “What a fucking load of shit…” she started, then glanced up and Mia and decided to barrel on, “…and all because of that shitbag Roy.”
Rose stopped there, waiting to see what Mia would say. She was so full of rage right now; but since being in SeRVE, she’d learned to tamp it down, if only temporarily. Besides, she was kind of hoping to see Mia flare up, just to see.
“It’s just like…” Mia trailed off as she tried to find what she wanted to say and frowned. “What the shit, right? Yeah, like I guess it didn’t take much to figure out that Roy was dealing with shit or whatever. But it’s just like all of this is coming out of no where. And…”
She trailed off again furrowing her eyebrows. “I looked up to Roy. I looked up to him because the shit he had been able to get through and like be ok. And now he’s a Red Lantern and he tried to kill Ollie and who even knows where he is now or whats going to happen or what is even fucking going on. It’s a bunch of bullshit.”
Okay Rose had been hoping for yelling and table-slamming fist, but Mia just looking increasingly frowny and distressed and almost confused as she spoke about Roy was certainly not what Rose was expecting. Still, she didn’t feel bad or anything for encouraging her to talk about this. God knew Rose had her share of sibling issues.
“I used to look up to him too, when he was all CBI or whatever and he was the Titans leader. He did a lot for me back then. And now it’s like…I dunno, it’s like he’s worse than I was when I was at my worse, it’s so freaking annoying. How anyone could think he’s a good parent is beyond —” Rose cut herself off. It’s not like she had any sort of love or loyalty towards Lian, it wasn’t that at all. But the thought of yet another father being so fucking self-involved that he can’t even care for his daughter…well that was a too-familiar story. Rose had once thought Roy was different, but not anymore.
“What the fuck is a Red Lantern? I thought they only came in one color.”
Mia nodded her head as Rose spoke and then sat in silence eating her toast. But she had to kind of smile at Rose’s out burst about Red Lanterns and she laughed slightly.
“Really? There are like a bunch of different colors. They’re like a rainbow. I don’t really know like… about all of them. But I think like… Red Lanterns vomit like acid blood or something all over the place and stuff. And I don’t really know.” She shrugged her shoulders. She didn’t have extensive knowledge about Lanterns just a vague understanding that there were different colors and some colors were bad.
Red was a bad color. “They’re like… anger I think? Like Green is Will. Red is rage.”
Rose looked vaguely interested, but only so far as her and her immediately vicinity was concerned.
“I’d be a Red Lantern,” Rose decided. “Because sometimes I wanna take down all sorts of fuckheads. I’d be a way better Red Lantern than Roy, that’s for sure.” If there were a punch if different colors, Rose squinted thoughtfully at Mia.
“I guess you’d be like…a hot pink lantern? I dunno something loud and bright and annoying, you know.”
“You don’t even know what the other colors are.” Mia said and smiled slightly. And maybe it was good to talk about something not really related to everything going on. Because all she’d been doing was… thinking about the shit that happened, and the horrible things that could happen still.
She thought for a moment and shrugged. “Well, Kyle said I could be a blue lantern, Blue is hope by the way. But I don’t know. Hope isn’t something I’ve ever really… run on, or whatever.” Mia picked up one of the peach slices that Rose had given her and popped it into her mouth as she thought for a moment. “I don’t know. I don’t think I’d be a Lantern at all. The Blue Lanterns do have Saint Walker, I’ve never met him but he’s awesome. The Red Lanterns do have a cat though… But the Green Lanterns have a whole planet.”
Mia laughed and shook her head letting out a sigh. “Anyway, if we’re going with the obnoxious lantern corps it’d probably be like… Black light colors. That’d actually be awesome.”
Connor had gotten a message from Mia, and well… everyone that Ollie and Kate had been attacked. After having been out on patrol all night, going back home and seeing what it looked like there, was sort of a sock. But he made sure to grab Mia’s meds before zetaing up to the Watchtower. He checked in with the Doctors who assured him that both his dad, and Kate were alive.
Hopefully they were better then alive but he’d take it for now and told them to keep them updated on anything that happened. Then he headed out on search for Mia.
He found her, and Rose, in the cafeteria talking, and was relieved to see she was alright, at least. “Hey.” He said going up to the two girls and hugging Mia before taking a seat and sliding her pill case over towards her. “Hey, Rose.” Connor greeted, happy that she had come up for Mia. Then glanced between the girls, “How are you holding up?” The question was mostly directed at Mia, but, either way.
Rose was about to give Mia all sorts of opinon on Mia-the-Glow-In-Black-Light-Lantern, when she looked up to see Connor as he entered the cafeteria. He was making a beeline to them and he immediately hugged Mia. It was about time Rose saw him emerging from his usual avoidance tactics; at least, she seemed to think he liked to avoid her. Maybe it was the way she was always licking her teeth at him and trying to grab his ass. Who knew.
“Hey Connor, I’m doing fine,” Rose butted in, leaning forward on the table. She couldn’t help herself, this boy did…things to her. And even with Queen and that scary woman nearly dead, Rose figured flirting was still game. Why not - didn’t they always say that death and marriages brought out the need to screw? Not that she wished Queen or his woman death, or anything…she shrugged to herself.
“Doing better now that you’re here.” She didn’t even care if Connor acknowledged her or not. She just wanted to say that.
“Connor!” Mia said practically jumping up from her seat and hugging him back. She sat back down again, and took the pill case he slid over towards her. “Thanks.”
She was about to answer him when Rose cut in and Mia rolled her eyes and grinned over at her. “Really?” She said in an amused way. Oh Rose. That was all she commented about it though. Because at the very least Rose attempting to hit on Connor could be amusing. So, unless she got out of hand, Mia was going to allow it to go on.
She turned to look at Connor and shrugged her shoulders. “I’m holding up fine. Kate is ok, and Hal’s in with Ollie right now.” Mia said as she ripped off another piece of her toast to eat. “I don’t think anyone has heard or seen Roy since the attack. So, yeah. No one really seems to know what is going on. So, that’s always a lot of fun for everyone…” She sighed. What could you do though. Not knowing anything seemed to happen a lot in their line of work…
Connor furrowed his eyebrows and sent Rose a confused look as she spoke, “Thanks?” He said looking at the amused look on Mia’s face out of the corner of his eyes but figured it was just best to not dwell on things he didn’t get. He’d understand eventually probably… Give it time.
He turned back to Mia when she started talking and nodded his head slowly taking in everything she was saying. “And he just showed up at the house and attacked them?” He frowned. Obviously something was wrong and it did feel like they were missing a big part of what was happening. He was just worried what anyone as planning on doing if they got their hands on Roy.
But he had the feeling that whatever happened, he was going to be one of the only people who felt like… Roy needed help. Maybe Roy was an angry person, but this? … “Is anyone looking for him?”
“I…kinda saw what happened,” Rose finally admitted. Well, she didn’t really, which was why she wasn’t going to mention it to Mia. And truth was, what she saw, they way it happened…she hated to admit it but it kind of freaked her out. Fortunately then that Green Lantern dude came and took Queen and the woman away.
But now that Connor was here, it felt more like teammates talking about business, rather than two friends talking about one helluva fucked-up family.
“He was fucking spewing red shit all over everything and it burned through shit, it looked like. All he wanted to do was kill Queen. I only saw the last bit of it, I went back to my room to get my weapons but by then he was gone.” This was a lie. Rose watched him leave; in fact, by the time she’d hauled her ass there, he was already leaving. “A Red fucking Lantern. Who knew they came in all colors of the rainbow? He’s probably out in space, borking that red shit all over like, poor fucking E.T. or something. Phone home my ass.” She shrugged. “Sounds like Lantern business to me. Maybe that red-headed one went after him.”
Mia raised her eyebrows over at Rose as she spoke and blinked. She didn’t question why Rose hadn’t said that before. Instead she leaned back in her chair and listened to her describe what happened. She reached out for her water bottle and opened one of the tops of her pill case taking one of them before closing it again, because, well it was kind of that time…
“Wait, what?” Mia said, her eyes widening as she swallowed the water in her mouth and frowned over at Rose. “It’s not Lantern business. It’s our family business! Roy’s our family. Ollie’s our family. No Lanterns were even attacked or were in danger!” She didn’t like that at all. If it was any Lantern’s business it was Hal’s business and that was it. Maybe Kyle, but that was just a maybe.
No, she didn’t like the thought of Lanterns going off after Roy. Like… really at all.
He listened intently as Rose had told them what she saw and before he could respond, Mia did. Part of him was thinking the same thing, to be honest. He didn’t know if she was getting all up in arms about it because she she wanted them to deal with Roy themselves, or because, like him, she was worried about Roy as well. But then again, the more logical part of himself did know this was at least partly Lantern Business.
“Mia.” He said in a level voice to try and get her to calm down before she started to jump up and yell, or worse get Rose riled up more then she already was as well. “If Roy’s a Red Lantern then it is partially Lantern business. Maybe someone can talk to Hal and see if he knows if people are already trying to deal with this, or if they have any plans.”
Connor looked around as he thought for a moment and looked back at the girls. “Where is Lian? Is she sleeping somewhere, or, what?”
“How are they,” Rose asked, concentrating on pushing a loose grape around with her finger.
